Troubles with Corona
Regional Medical Center and the Corona Police Department
Event: Community
'care' for a citizen after a serious suicide attempt retraumatized
the individual. Each department appeared devoid of empathy
and treated the citizen as a 'non-person.' One department
tried to subdue a citizen's reaction to pain from a needle
injected into an open gash by smashing down on a steel mechanical
restraint.
Question: If we
cannot provide sensitivity to a patient or citizen in our modern
day civilization, in a professional environment, in a trauma-aware
facility, then, as a race, how much hope is there for us?
If Corrective Action continues to be deferred and evaded,
then how will something change, it nothing changes?
Imagine a suicide attempt, a gash so large it took 21 stitches, and when the needle entered into the gash for the 4th time, the victim flinches....and because of the flinch, a cop hammers down on a handcuff...full

Community
Notice
Mission Failure:
Each department above claims to support community service and
protection. However, there is an event that happened to me on February
11, 2003 that disputes each of these claims, and I would suspect
this is not isolated to me, and if investigated, I would anticipate
an enduring pattern could be identified. I am writing about
this event because I hope to create community awareness and
involvement what will help improve the delivery of care and
protection to our citizens.
Cavort: I believe
that most professionals want to provide a service that is valuable
to the citizen. However, something went wrong...
Application:
This work is not intended to provoke or single-out any individual(s)
in the service of the community. The propose of this work is
to identify problems and inspire the acquisition resources
(equipment, training and capacity) for professionals to achieve
tasks that would provide a win-win environment. Too often the
professional is expected to perform duties without sufficient
sensitivity training, and the citizen is retraumatized. In
addition, it would appear there is not an effective accountability
system to measure quality assurance when providing care or service
for the community.
Why Are Some
Professionals So Mean? Usually because they could be tired from
working double shifts, and over stressed from trying to perform
tasks with limited resources, and last, they are just 'human' and
acting out their own unresolved prejudices
on the victim (you).
Corrective Action:
Provide frequent in-service sensitive training. Provide resources
that can resolve problems and lower working environment stress to
tolerable levels for the professional. Implement an effective system
that will measure community satisfaction when services are provided.
Benefits:
Citizens treated with a warm positive regard are more likely to
improve their functioning and are less likely to consume higher
levels of services, which will free up resources. Respect, empathy
and a desire-to-help can facilitate a win-win partnership between
the professional the citizen.
The Actual Event:
I Was
Treated With Contempt and Distain.
Excerpt from the book
in progress: 5150
"On
my right was a physician assistant and he wanted to stitch the
gash. He stuck the
needle deep into the wound. I flinched and recoiled.
The cop smashed down on the handcuff in what appeared to be
a punitive measure due to his annoyance with me."
